I Want to Backflip! (バク転したい！Bakuten Shitai!) is the first episode of the Bakuten!! anime series.
Synopsis[]
Moved by Ao High’s performance at the previous Interhigh Tournament, first year Shotaro Futaba becomes interested in the school's men's rhythmic gymnastics club. After being invited to watch the team’s first session, he learns how to backflip, prompting him to join the team.
Plot Summary[]
The episode begins with Futaba's flashback to Ao High's performance at the Interhigh Tournament one year ago. After his baseball game, as he is heading home, Futaba passes by Shichigahama, Watari, Onagawa and Tsukidate warming up before being called into the stadium by their coach.
Intrigued, Futaba heads into the stadium and watches Ao High's performance and is captivated. He is surprised to find that despite their flawless performance, the team does not score well. The person sitting next to him explains that the team was penalized for only having four members compete, when the standard is six. When Futaba returns home that evening, he discusses the tournament with his family, at which point his dad asks him which school he wishes to go to. When Futaba goes back to his room sitting amongst the many school flyers and contemplating which school to pick, he remembers the performance he watched.
Flash-forward to present day, Futaba is now going to Ao High's entrance ceremony. Elsewhere, Shichigahama mentions to the team how they must go out and recruit at least two other members to the club before they get taken by the other sports clubs. As they are heading out, Kurikoma hands them flyers telling them that they must give out one hundred of them.
As the team goes around handing out flyers, Futaba watches anxiously, too afraid to say that he wants to join the team. As he is panicking, Misato comes forward and says that he wants to join the team.
In the club room, Misato is signing up for the club when Kurikoma mentions that Misato finished second in the 37th Men's Junior Tournament. This fact scares Futaba who was peeking in from the window. Kurikoma heads out of the club room and catches him there bringing the others outside. Shichigahama then invites Futaba to watch their first session after Misato remembers their encounter at the tournament.
In the gymnasium, Futaba joins the others as they practice when he brings up how cool it was to watch the team backflip. This remark prompts Shichigahama and Tsukidate to teach Futaba how to do a backflip. After successfully being able to do one on his own, Futaba cheerfully says that he will join the team.
